The hybrid vehicle or Hydro electric vehicles [HEV] produce very little to no emissions compared to standard petrol or diesel engine vehicles. This has the twin effect of having a positive output with regards to environmental impact and of course, a massive saving in fuel. Many drivers (over a million according to the statistics]) have already switched from driving regular cars to these modern-day wonders.

They have smaller engines, yet this does not affect speed, as many hybrids can currently reach speeds comparable to petrol engines. How will these Hybrid cars affect our future along with the way we drive and will they effectively change the way we perceive transportation?

The history of the Hybrid stretches back much further than you would believe. As early as the 1900’s, there had been many enterprising individuals working on rudimentary petro-electric engines and it was the creator of Porsche who achieved the creation of the first working model. Capable of achieving lightning fast speeds of 50km/h, this wooden vehicle had a small battery pack which powered electric hub motors (a motor today’s busses and larger vehicles use) kicking in at 25kms. This was the first major breakthrough for hybrid vehicles and a precursor for all electric engine techniques.

As the century progressed, a man by the name of Victor Wouk would create a more effective prototype of the HEV engine. The year would be 1972 when Wouk’s prototype hybrid drivetrain engine was first tested in a Buick Skylark. This also marks the first time that the American governments EPA would block production of Hybrid vehicles. As the decades rolled on, there were continuous improvements and innovations made to the Hybrid engine. Such as a regenerative braking engine, use to recuperate some of the energy lost during stopping. This energy is then saved in the battery and later used to power the motor whenever the car switches over to electric mode. Also, the change to a nickel-cadmium battery (otherwise known as rechargeable) over standard car batteries truly enhanced the development of the HEV engine.

Proper Hybrid production began in the 90’s, with the creation of the Honda Insight and Toyota Prius. Of these cars, the Prius has been in especially high demand and a waiting list was in effect up until 2004. As the increase in global alertness amplified, sales soared and Toyota became the market leaders in commercial hybrid technology. The demand for clean running vehicles is higher than ever, with most countries converting their public transport vehicles to ones with HEV engines, in a bid to curb the assault of pollution. There are many Hybrid vehicles on the roads of South Africa already, yet you may not have even realised such cars were hybrids. The BMW 1 series were the first BMW’s in the world to have a mild hybrid engine. Mild hybrid engines are not petro-electric combinations, but are in effect large starter motors which are turned off whenever the car is idle and is instantly activated whenever the BMW is moving. Most new Chevrolets under construction have also made the switch to mild or full hybrid engines. Consider that when your next car rental is a new Chevrolet.

HEV cars are the first of many steps in a complete and global revamp of our total pollution production. Other fun activities include daytime shows such as pantomimes, these are available from July to August, and other family shows from the parks mascots run throughout the season which is open from March to November.

Many visitors to the holiday island of Cyprus decide to hire a car in order to make the most of their visit. If you've never driven in Cyprus before then there a few things that you'll need to be aware of.

Driving abroad often involves some minor differences from what you are used to home. These variations may take the form of different laws governing how you drive, or regulations about the state of your vehicle and insurance procedures.

Cyprus, as a member of the European Union, does have many similarities with other EU member states, although there are some variations that you need to be aware of.

The first thing that you're likely to notice is that drivers on Cyprus drive on the left hand side of the road. If you're travelling to the island from the UK then this means that you won't need to adapt, but it is the opposite of all other western European countries.

As in the UK, the law states that drivers and front seat passengers must wear seatbelts. In the case of those travelling in the back of the vehicle, a seatbelt must also be worn if the car is fitted with one.

Children under the age of five must travel in the back of the car and must use a suitable child seat, rather than simply using the back seat in the way that an adult would.

All distances on the island are shown in kilometres and all speed limits are shown in kilometres per hour. If you're used to thinking in terms of miles per hour, then you'll need to take this into account.

There are a couple of items that you are required to carry in your car. These are two red warning triangles and are to be used to warn other vehicles of your presence, in case of an accident, breakdown or emergency.

In general, you should find it fairly easy to drive on the island. Make sure that you stick to the rules and drive safely.

On the other hand, a trailer-style RV has the advantage of letting you unhook the towing vehicle when you don't wish to move your home about. This lowers driving costs, increasing your fuel efficiency significantly.

Always feel free to consult your RV dealer on what class vehicle best suits your needs, especially if cost is one of the major issues. African Safari Lodge – The Villa Blanche

On route to our destination, I wasn’t aware that we were going to cross over water of any kind, but if I’d done any research I would’ve known that our African lodge was situated just off the coast of Madagascar. My long-time friend Jessica and I were on our way to the island of Nosy Be for an African safari. I like the name, Nosy Be, it sounds like a noisy little bee but it actually means “big island”.

Our cosy bungalow
We eventually arrived at our accommodation, The Villa Blanche, after our boat trip. It was everything I was hoping for. A cosy little bungalow, which isn’t too fancy, but still had all the luxuries one expects when you want to relax on your holiday. Nevertheless, I knew I wasn’t going to spend much time in our bungalow, because one thing was for sure, I was determined to go home with my best holiday tan ever. And what better place to get a dream tan than on a paradise island, lying stretched out beneath the African sun?

There is something about the African sun. Personally I believe that you can’t have a happy life without spending some good quality time in the sun. Just another reason why I love my job as a photographer, but this week was my week of relaxation, and except for capturing my holiday moments, I wasn’t going to spend any time away from the heavenly beach.

Palm trees and sunny skies
Almost every morning, Jess and I got up as early as possible to spend some good quality time in the sun. No matter how tempting it is to overindulge, the truth of the matter is that even if you live in Africa, her sun can burn you badly.

It was February which meant rainfalls at night and balmy humidity by day, but in my mind’s eye it was just perfect! Spending lazy days on the long stretch of white beach and making the most of the warm weather was what I had set out to do.

On the island of Nosy Be you can find beaches stretching for as far as the eye can see, lined by palm trees, making it an ideal location for an island style holiday.

We had our deck chairs set up on our bungalow’s deck, and with a cocktail in one hand and a book in the other we left all our worldly worries behind. Yes, this is the life. With such a relaxed environment we just had to make sure we didn’t fall asleep while lying in the sun, as one would surely regret it in the most painful way once you pick up a bit of sunstroke from being in the sun too long and unprotected.

A little reserved
On one of our attempts to do more than lazing around, we decided to go on an African safari to the Lokobe Reserve and of course I had my camera handy for any Kodak moments that might occur. We didn’t see anything for the first half-hour or so, but then we got lucky. Hiding far up in one of Madagascar’s many trees was a female black lemur cradling her little one safely in her arms. How Jess managed to spot her I still don’t know, but it was obvious that she was alone and shy.

There are so many varieties of Lemur in the forests, that we saw quite a few on the remainder of our hike. Very playful, and so noisy! Chameleons were almost just as abundant as the lemurs. If it weren’t for our guide, we would never have spotted them all! The colourful butterflies provided much animation for us and its really a birder’s paradise. Not to forget the stunning flora. Especially the beautiful Baobab trees.

After our adventurous expedition, and capturing Madagascar’s local animal pride on film, we headed back to our lodge for a well deserved Moroccan styled feast.

Not only was our stay at The Villa Blanche perfect for an African safari getaway, but the lodge’s set up is the ideal relaxed holiday getaway.

Nothing revitalises the soul like a few lazy days in the sun, surrounded by the most pristine presence of nature.

It’s just like in the Japanese painting, where untouched spaces are no less important than the image itself – this way, they stimulate the flight of fancy. Here, in this city, grand voids between huge buildings will fill your mind with some ideas. That is why empty space is not something you regret about.

The city of waltzes, parks, baking and wine – that’s what Vienna is. The capital of Austria is a truly cosmopolitan city. In the course of many centuries different nations that inhabited the city’s territory shared their cultures and traditions with each other. That is the reason why local people have such an intriguing and sometimes cynical character.

In approximately 500 BC the Romans chose a settlement on a Danube river as a place for their frontier city, “Vindobona”. Since then the city, now called Vienna, played a principal part in European history. This is the place from where Austria grew into a powerful empire. The capital became even more magnificent during the rule of the Hapsburg dynasty. Those days are gone, but local people still follow historical traditions. Moreover, local masters of the past left a huge cultural heritage to the future Viennese generations.

In 18th century Vienna got popular all around Europe as the city of rich culture, especially music. Great musicians, such as Haydn, Mozart, Schubert, Beethoven, Bruckner and Lanner lived and worked here, and their music is still performed at concert halls all around the world. And in the end of the 19th century the city’s artists and architects, such as Gustav Klimt, Egon Schiele, Oskar Kokoschka, Joseph Hoffman, Otto Wagner and Adolf Loos committed cultural revolution which opened a new page in history of experimental and radical arts.

Still, Vienna is a Baroque city. While tourists scrutinize golden statues and churches with rosy-cheeked cherubs, wander around the treasure-filled museums, or while away their time in one of the inevitable cafes, they get the feeling that splendour and richness are all around them. This pomp looks like delicious whipped cream – the citizens’ favourite Schlagobers which adorns many Viennese cakes.

The Viennese style is really pompous and flowery: white horses prancing by the sounds of an elegant music, rich drapery adorning local monuments, beautiful decorations embellishing the city’s strict houses, gilded Johann Strauss statue standing on a grave among the greenery, passionate music by Richard Strauss; geometric mosaic on ornamental canvases by Gustav Klimt, slow measured melody of mechanical clocks. This majestic, attractive and magic city enchants its guests with its charm and aristocratic elegance. This is the place where waiters still bow as if greeting Hapsburg prince. The waltzing city. I Love Touring Italy - The Emilia Subregion

If you are looking for a European tourist destination, consider the Emilia-Romagna region of northern Italy. It may be the only region of Italy named for a road, one constructed by the Ancient Romans almost 2200 years ago. This article describes the Emilia subregion, a bit of its history, its many tourist attractions, local food, and local wine. A companion article presents Romagna, the eastern "half" of the region that borders the tiny country of San Marino and the Adriatic Sea.

Our tour of Emilia is quite straightforward; it follows the highway basically from east to west, going slightly southward along the way. We'll start at Piacenza, a city founded on the Po River by the Etruscans. It later became the first Roman military colony. The Piazza dei Cavalli (Square of the Horses) located in the city center boasts baroque statues of two historic leaders. Nearby you will find a Thirteenth Century Palace, Palazzo del Comune, formerly the site of the city government.

The Duomo's (Cathedral) bell tower contains a cage that held troublemakers who were imprisoned stark naked and taunted by the crowd below. You may prefer looking at the beautiful art and sculptures inside the building. The Museo Civico (City Museum) contains a famous Boticelli painting and Etruscan artifacts. Art lovers will want to visit the Galleria d'Arte Moderna Ricci Oddi for its collection of Nineteenth and Twentieth Century Italian art.

Opera lovers shouldn't miss the town Busseto, famous for Guiseppe Verdi, who was actually born in the nearby village of Roncole now renamed Roncole Verdi. Busseto contains the Fifteenth Century Villa Pallavicino where he lived and worked and the Nineteenth Century Teatro Verdi that performs many of his magnificent works.

Parma is a historic city that has changed hands frequently over the centuries. It still maintains a French influence. Whenever I hear the word Parma two culinary delights immediately come to mind; Parmesan cheese (officially called Parmigiano Reggiano cheese) and Parma ham (prosciutto crudo). The term crudo means uncooked. It doesn't stand for crude; this absolutely delicious ham is the opposite of crude. Piazza Garibaldi (Garibaldi Square) is the center of Parma. Among the sights to see are the Sixteenth Century church Santa Maria della Steccata and its frescos, the Twelfth Century Duomo (Cathedral) and nearby Battistero (Baptisry), and several churches and museums. Parma is also known for its opera at the Teatro Regio. Modena and its surroundings is the home to four very different international stars: the opera singer Luciano Pavarotti, Maserati and Ferrari sports cars, and balsamic vinegar. Which do you prefer?

Be sure to see Modena's old city, the Twelfth Century Duomo (Cathedral) with its fascinating medieval sculptures, marble bell tower, and crypt containing the tomb of its patron saint, San Geminiano. The Palazzo dei Musei (Palace of the Museum) contains many illuminated books and a very historic Bible and map showing Columbus's landing in America, not many years after the fact.

The Consorzio Produttori Aceto Balsamico Tradizionale di Modena (Traditional Modena Balsamic Vinegar Producers Association) will give you a taste of the city's most famous food product. You may want to visit Salumeria Gusti, founded over four hundred years ago and said to be the world's oldest delicatessen. Perhaps because there are only four tables don't expect to pay regular delicatessen prices.

Bologna. Don't judge this city by the bottom of the line prepared meat that somehow shares its name. Among Bologna's notable achievements, it is home to the oldest university in Europe. This was no little University; by the Thirteenth Century its student body numbered more than ten thousand served by 150 taverns. Laura Bassi was its first female professor, in fact the first woman to teach officially at a European University, appointed professor of anatomy in 1732 at the ripe old age of 21. Bassi spent most of her academic career teaching physics, but managed to have eight children along the way. A super woman in a super town.

The Basilica di San Petronio Cathedral was started in the Fourteenth Century and is still unfinished, perhaps because of the university expansion next door over four hundred years ago. Don't wait until its finished to take a look. The Piazza di Porta Ravegnana is the site of two towers worthy of a reference in Dante's Inferno. The Torre degli Asinelli is available for climbing. This tower leans less than the Leaning Tower of Pisa, but a lot more than it should.

Other sights include the Palazzo Comunale (Communal Palace) the seat of Bologna's government for the last seven hundred years or so. The Palazzo contains two museums and a library, a few palaces, the Pinacoteca Nazionale art gallery and the Museo del Patrimonio Industriale (Museum of Industry). You can guess that given the huge number of university students Bologna has quite an active night life.

We will finish our tour of Emilia with a look at the UNESCO world heritage site of Ferrara, this article's only city off the main road. You may remember Ferrara from the famous movie The Garden of the Finzi-Continis. Talking about movies, Ferrara was the birthplace of the famous filmmaker Michelangelo Antonioni.

Start your tour at the Castello Estense (Estense Castle) the seat of power of the Este dynasty who for hundreds of years ruled the area with an iron fist. Among its numerous features are a hanging garden, and moat, and a drawbridge. While its artwork is magnificent, the castle was a site of unbridled cruelty. Its dungeons were filled with prisoners for centuries, up until the middle of World War II. Don't miss the nearby Gothic Duomo (Cathedral). Ferrara was an important Jewish center from 1492 until the Second World War. You can visit the ghetto and the Museo Ebraico (Jewish Museum), which was once a synagogue.

The Palazzo dei Diamanti (Palace of the Diamonds) owes its name to the thousands of pink and white little decorations that cover the building. Go inside to see the Pinacoteca Nazionale art gallery. The mile long Via delle Volte running parallel to the Po River is one of the most ancient streets in Europe. There are many other palaces to see. Finish your tour of the city with a nightcap in Osteria Al Brindisi, Europe's oldest wine bar dating back to 1435. The famous scientist Copernicus once lived and drank here.

What about food? Emilia-Romagna, in particular Emilia is a true favorite among gourmets. As good as Parma ham is, many prefer the rare, expensive Culatello di Zibello ham aged for at least eleven months. Certified foods include balsamic vinegars, cured meats, cheese, fruits, vegetables, and even bread, Copia Ferrarese from Ferrara.

Let's suggest a sample menu, one of many. Start with Prosciutto con melone (Parma Ham with Melon). Then try Vitello Bolognese (Veal with Ham and Parmesan Cheese). For dessert indulge yourself with Zuppa Inglese (Italian Trifle). Be sure to increase your dining pleasure by including local wines with your meal.

We conclude with a quick look at Emilian wine. Emilia-Romagna ranks 5th among the 20 Italian regions for acreage devoted to wine grapes and 4th for total annual wine production. The region produces about 57% red and 43% white wine. The Emilia-Romagna region produces about twenty DOC wines about half of which come from Emilia. DOC stands for Denominazione di Origine Controllata, which may be translated as Denomination of Controlled Origin, presumably a high-quality wine. Try some Lambrusco DOC red wines, which are often fizzy or frothy. Frankly in Emilia-Romagna the wine isn't as good as the food.
